Light is freedom / Lacaton&Vassal / loft living in low-cost housing in Mulhouse

´Freedom is something we try to accomplish with all of our work´ says Anne Lacaton.Daylight, of course, means light that comes from the outsider, but it is also chat we can see from the inside to the outsider. They explain that the boundaries of a home extend as far as one can see and that maximising daylight from the inside to the outsider is one of the fundamental design paradigms. One thing we always try to do is to avoid walls. We have to produce floors, columns and beams. No walls It is a question of freedom and maximising capacity. Each time we design a building we ask, ´what could be the maximum degree of openness for a bedroom or a bathroom? These  questions not only have to do with daylight but also with the possibility of going from inside to outside.

In honour of the Spanish architects Luis Mansilla (1959-2012) who died in late February, starting the cycle of text – places with culture – just selected museum in León.
The places with culture could remind us the importance of public spaces that surround us, where we spend our time, where we can approach to art.
The former royal city of León, located in the northeaster part of Spain attracts attention for its beautiful historical buildings, gothic cathedral and Romanesque basilica. At the turn of the millennium, the city government decided to explore the possibilities of linking the present with the medieval image of the city and continue the cultural development, to offer a place where people can come and spend it with art.
The Spanish architects proposed for the city MUSAC, Museum of Contemporary Art of Castile. For people in León the museum has become an icon, a place for meetings and leisure. Museum is built in the peripheral part of the city.
The main entrance facade will impress you by its colourful. When architects designed the museum, they were seeking for some connection between the medieval city and the possibilities of using new technologies in processing. They digitalized mosaic glass windows of the cathedral and computer-derived colour range brought to the front glass facade. Created a colourful facade of the museum, which creates a public square. Towards the colour variations near the entrance facade turns into a grey-blue.
The apparent simplicity and scale of cultural art centre hidden variable flexible structure.

Construction effects playful, but in fact is subject to a rigorous system. One floor building is constructed of precast concrete elements and consists of a set of diamond and rectangular rooms, which are linked together, with the possibility of mutual interconnection of individual variability in space separated by a door through the entire height.

The space between the exhibition spaces are filled with internal courtyards, which is lit with skylights and elevated vertical while offering attractive vistas. Light grey interior simple smooth glossy floor, complete with mat walls brighten ribbed ceilings highlighted lighting.

Museum collection includes works from the nineties to the present. In addition to exhibition space is also a base for various cultural activities.

Architects designed beautiful elevated spaces that don’t disturb your smooth walk through the museum. Space, according to the authors, should promote links between people and nature, artefacts and events. You feel here as visiting with friends. These spaces will let you meditate. It’s charming place where you can come anytime. We travel for beauty and interesting history, attract us the past. Let’s discover the architecture of today.

For design of the building architects got the European Prize for architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award 2007. The evaluation panel noted that the museum is a place where art breathes well and where the blurred distinction between private and public, between work and rest, between life and art.

´I am starting to think that space is not a significant part of our preoccupations in life. Just time, that spills and slips between our fingers when we try to catch it.´ Luis Moreno Mansilla.

English * 02. Sinnes / Centrum umění / architekti Francisco a Manuel Aires Mateus

Like someone travel for wine and delicious food, the others to see the beauty of Greek temples, so I'm travelling and observing architecture that creates space around us, the space in which we live. In my travel ways to objective pre-architectural aims it left a strong memory of the city Sinnes. A small Portuguese fishing town south of Lisbon, with buildings oriented to the sea, with life centred on him. The ocean here has always been the main objective observation of the local people. This relationship is an example of a close connection with the ocean and Portuguese culture that emerged from it. Portuguese like to watch the sea silently, staring dreamily into the ocean far away from the seats of their cars and their advertisement often like to appropriate this theme.
I was travelling for the Centro de Artes and found a beautiful city. On the main entrance point to the city to centre is built by the architecture office Aires Mateus modern Cento de Artes. This place in city is taking the main role to link the historical and modern part of the city. Centro de Artes contains the variety of activities generating unique place: exhibition spaces, library, reading room, concert hall, auditorium, various small rooms, computer laboratories, historical archives and occasional café space under the roof with the overview across the city on the ocean.
The building from outside impression as the historic walls which grows from four longitudinal base materials with embedded atriums. Individual floors are suspended like bridge structures along the lines of the exterior walls. This design allows complete freedom in the basement and spatial variability and in the ground undisturbed views across the building and connection to life outside. The robustness of the building is playing with the light transparency of individual spaces and vistas between the exterior and interior.
Pedestrian street to center walks through the house, when the ground floor is the interior of entry and libraries connected with the street by glazed belt along the entire height of buildings on human’s high. Street is extended into the interior. Sitting inside the ground floor perceive the outside pedestrians and vice versa. Enter from the street to the Centro de Artes by a small subtle bridge offer to visitor grasp the principle laid out space in all its glory. Vista to the underground to gallery can visitor decides where to go.
The architects created a light rigid shell for fine naturally bright white interior. The walls and the ceilings are white, on the floors shine white marble. It's the perfect play of light and different heights of the spaces inside. Transit of natural light into the underground exhibition space is incredible. In summer time the spaces below street level acts as an illuminated caves. From the basement you can see through vistas blue sky and also unexpected touch to ceiling, thanks to the low heights of small exhibition spaces. The main auditorium is height on the whole height of one block. Going through the install exhibitions by ramps connecting the individual levels, not even one noticed that pass beneath the street and is located on the other side. On the whole program of the art center is a wonderful free entry into with a variable range offer throughout the whole year. It is a place with charge and energy.
