In honour of the Spanish architects Luis Mansilla (1959-2012) who died in late February, starting the cycle of text – places with culture – just selected museum in León.
The places with culture could remind us the importance of public spaces that surround us, where we spend our time, where we can approach to art.
The former royal city of León, located in the northeaster part of Spain attracts attention for its beautiful historical buildings, gothic cathedral and Romanesque basilica. At the turn of the millennium, the city government decided to explore the possibilities of linking the present with the medieval image of the city and continue the cultural development, to offer a place where people can come and spend it with art.
The Spanish architects proposed for the city MUSAC, Museum of Contemporary Art of Castile. For people in León the museum has become an icon, a place for meetings and leisure. Museum is built in the peripheral part of the city.
The main entrance facade will impress you by its colourful. When architects designed the museum, they were seeking for some connection between the medieval city and the possibilities of using new technologies in processing. They digitalized mosaic glass windows of the cathedral and computer-derived colour range brought to the front glass facade. Created a colourful facade of the museum, which creates a public square. Towards the colour variations near the entrance facade turns into a grey-blue.
The apparent simplicity and scale of cultural art centre hidden variable flexible structure.
Construction effects playful, but in fact is subject to a rigorous system. One floor building is constructed of precast concrete elements and consists of a set of diamond and rectangular rooms, which are linked together, with the possibility of mutual interconnection of individual variability in space separated by a door through the entire height.
The space between the exhibition spaces are filled with internal courtyards, which is lit with skylights and elevated vertical while offering attractive vistas. Light grey interior simple smooth glossy floor, complete with mat walls brighten ribbed ceilings highlighted lighting.
Museum collection includes works from the nineties to the present. In addition to exhibition space is also a base for various cultural activities.
Architects designed beautiful elevated spaces that don’t disturb your smooth walk through the museum. Space, according to the authors, should promote links between people and nature, artefacts and events. You feel here as visiting with friends. These spaces will let you meditate. It’s charming place where you can come anytime. We travel for beauty and interesting history, attract us the past. Let’s discover the architecture of today.
For design of the building architects got the European Prize for architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award 2007. The evaluation panel noted that the museum is a place where art breathes well and where the blurred distinction between private and public, between work and rest, between life and art.
´I am starting to think that space is not a significant part of our preoccupations in life. Just time, that spills and slips between our fingers when we try to catch it.´ Luis Moreno Mansilla.
